Angry Boater: Joel Sanders

If you could turn your back on everything you knew to follow a dream, would you? Joel Sanders used to perform comedy in Vegas but, since 2010, he's living on a canal boat, floating around the UK's waterways. His podcast explores the quirky and often harsh realities of life afloat. You can see 'Angry Boater' live at 'Chilibomb' on Curtain Rd, Liverpool Street on Sunday September 19th - his first show in over a year. All ticket revenue from will be donated to The Michael Sobell Hospice. http://www.angryboater.com

Tom Bier spent a year working on a coal boat in London. In this revealing episode, perhaps too candidly, he shares his experiences.

Steff Coath has worked on a hotel boat for several seasons and, like Tom, has plenty of stories to share about servicing humans on the water. They now live together at Engineers Wharf on the Paddington Arm.

Some extraordinary tales this week. No spoilers.

A Towpath Ranger is not the same as a Power Ranger so instead of super powers, we talk about Dick's bygone days as a incompetent boater, marinas vs the cut, the work currently being carried out on the Paddington Arm, whether it's possible for cyclists to co-exist on the towpath with boaters & pedestrians.... and The Beach Boys.

The Angry Boater' live show has a 2nd date at The George Inn, 261 High Street, Berkhamsted on Saturday, Sept 16th from 8 pm to 10.15 pm.

Welcome to the Compodcast. Compost Queen, Kate Saffin, has been living on a narrowboat for 17 years & no longer concerns herself with the Pumpout vs Cassette debate. Instead, for the past 3 years she's been using a pair of buckets.

An eye-popping discussion which will even show you the connection between human waste & Brexit.

The creaking noise early on disappears after a few minutes. Apologies for the distraction.

More info on composting can be found at:

http://www.offgriddesigns.co.uk

Kate can also be seen in her solo show (not about composting) - "Idle Women of the Wartime Waterways." Details at the link below:

John Privett, co-owner of Book Barge 'Word on the Water' is an Anarchist. In this lively & in depth episode, we discuss what that means, how he became one and whether living on the waterways supports or conflicts with the principles of Anarchy.

We explore the serious issues like ....

Do we need RULES on the canal & should we tolerate or punish those who
do not follow them?

Should Kings Cross become a privatised floating market?

And the even more serious issues like....

Which celebrities have visited 'Word on the Water' & what books did they buy?

The occasional background growl belongs to 'Star', John's anarchic hound dog.

A fascinating talk with a unique & passionate boater.

As Martyn Whitwell sits in his London flat, elsewhere, his beloved narrowboat sits on the cut. He keeps a close eye on it though - several times a day  - via an online monitoring system that he's designed & customised himself.

Like most boaters, his waterways activities slow down in the winter but, once the weather turns in his favour, Martyn covers more boating miles in a week than many manage in a year.

As well as discussing his remote online monitoring system, we also talk about his narrowboating adventures on tidal waters.

Paul Curtis retired and bought his first boat last year - the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. It was bound to be perfect if it was new so he had a narrowboat built from scratch. What could go wrong? Here's a cautionary tale for anyone considering 'living the dream.' It's a fascinating conversation and it gets deep. This honest and human story goes far beyond the world of boating but, despite the horrors, it's an inspiring one too.

'The Angry Boater' live show will be at The George Inn, 261 High Street, Berkhamsted on Saturday, August 26th from 8 pm to 10 pm. Almost sold out. EXTRA DATE ADDED - SAT SEPT 16TH.

Last year, whilst triple-moored in Kings Cross, I received a note on my boat, from Mikaela, asking me to move my vessel. It's one of the many things Mikaela and I discuss in this lively episode. We also focus on the challenges of boating in the capital including congestion & boats moored overnight at lock landings and we use role play to explore how Mikaela deals diplomatically with difficult boaters like 'Nigel.'

Warren from Picot (he refuses to rename her The Shitanic) is my guest today for some top quality poop talk.

'Angry Boater' will be live at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, twice daily, from Aug 6th to 26th (not Tuesdays). Showtimes are 3.45 pm to 4.45 pm at Finnegans Wake and 7.25 pm to 8.25 pm at City Cafe.

I first met Paddy when we were both students. We didn't know each other well. 30 years on, for the first time, we talk properly. It's a good time, deep sometimes, on boating, books and what it is to be human.

The number of chaplains on the UK's waterways is increasing. Midlands based chaplain, Richard Alford, has been working with boaters in difficulty for a few years and met up in Hemel Hempstead to talk about his work. During the interview he invited me to accept Christ into my life and, even though I declined, we survived the awkwardness and stayed friends. For more information on the Waterways chaplaincy, visit: http://www.workplacematters.org.uk/chaplaincy/waterways/

Young newlywed boaters, Ed & Carli Fish have been boating for 3 years. We were double moored together in East London and bumped into each other again on the Grand Union this week. In this fun discussion, we talk about  the etiquette of double mooring and what it's like to be newbies living afloat in our overcrowded metropolis. You can read more about their experiences at Carli's superb boating blog. https://anarrowescape.wordpress.com/
